Water (H2O), is a liquid without colour,
taste, or odour. It is an oxide of hydrogen.
Water begins to freeze at 0°C (32°F), and to
boil at 100°C (212°F). When liquid, it is
virtually incompressible. When frozen, it
expands by 1/11 of its volume. At 39.2°F
(4°C), one cubic centimetre of water has a
mass of one gram. This is its maximum
density, forming the unit of specific
gravity. It has the highest known specific
heat, and acts as an efficient solvent,
particularly when hot. Most of the world's
water is in the sea, less than 0.01% is fresh
water. Water covers 70% of the earths
surface. A family of two adults and two
children uses approximately 200 litres per
day (UK figures).
